Connected by the Past, Focused on the FutureThis year we celebrate 100 years as a community! It was on June 12, 1922, that Brentwood became incorporated. But how did it all begin? Brentwood got its start 100 years ago for some of the same reasons you and your family are here today.
Quiet neighborhoods and convenient transportation - that’s what the original residents of Brentwood wanted. The Civil War had just ended and there was a big boom of jobs working for the government in Washington DC. People flocked to the area looking for good jobs and were attracted to neighborhoods that were outside of the hustle and bustle of downtown DC. One of those people was Civil War veteran Captain Wallace Bartlett. He bought over 200 acres of land where Brentwood now stands and moved his family here. Soon, he partnered with other land-owning neighbors and began selling single-family homes and small plots of land. Quickly, an entire community grew up around him. An area that became known as “Brentwood”.
Eventually, residents began to see the need for improvements in their neighborhood and began talking about how they could incorporate into their own municipality. Residents tried to incorporate three times, but the first two attempts were voted down by other residents who were concerned about the proposed boundary lines. Finally, in 1922 the residents agreed to the boundary lines, agreed to a town charter, and elected their first Mayor.
It was hard work those first few years. Resident volunteers dug ditches, built roads, and installed kerosene street lamps as Brentwood grew into its own. Thanks to the dedication and hard work of our first citizens, we can celebrate and enjoy 100 years of community
called Brentwood.

The New Year is here and as your Mayor, I’m happy to report that our community has continued to find new ways to grow and thrive despite the many challenges of the past year.
Brentwood grew into a safer and cleaner place to live with the completion of our first major sidewalk repair project in many years, plus we worked with the County to clear multiple stormwater channels in an effort to reduce flooding and protect the lives and properties of our residents. This year also saw several beautification projects including the restoration of forgotten parks and neglected alleyways - areas that will provide green space and recreation to our residents in the future.
This was the year that we finally secured the additional funding needed to not only begin work on the New Town Center but see the work completed. A New Town Center that provides community space to our residents alongside administrative workspace is on track to become a reality in only a year from now - a dream that began more than 12 years ago.
We also welcomed new staff to support our residents, including a Lead Code Enforcement Officer and Town Administrator. Our Police Department is leading by example, by partnering with neighboring Towns to be one of the first Police Departments in the nation to provide mental health services for our officers and residents in need.
Putting people first has always been my passion, and I’m proud to report that this year we found many different ways to support our residents. Rental relief workshops, weekly food distributions, direct financial assistance to those impacted by COVID-19, free Covid vaccination clinics, and several holiday assistance programs provided our residents with the resources they needed to stay healthy and well.
We have done good work but there is still much more to accomplish. My wish for you and your family is that 2022 brings us health and happiness and that we continue to grow into a proud and prosperous community.

POLICE DEPARTMENT ARTICLEWinter Driving Safety Precautions From The Brentwood Police DepartmentAdjusting to Winter ConditionsSafety is a top priority of the Town of Brentwood. When it involves wintery weather, it can be challenging for most motorists. The town makes every effort to make roadways safe and tries to provide efficient winter maintenance service. Weather conditions can be unpredictable, placing extra demands on your vehicle and your driving skills. Ensure you are well prepared for winter roads and always adjust your driving speed to existing road conditions.
Preparing for Driving in Winter
Stay alert, slow down, and stay in control are the three (3) key elements of safe winter driving. Drive according to roadway and weather conditions.
Keep a safe distance between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you to avoid situations where you may have to brake suddenly on a slippery surface.
Be Prepared—Is Your Vehicle Ready?
Get your vehicle winter-ready with a maintenance check-up. Do not wait for winter to have your battery, belts, hoses, radiator, oil, lights, brakes, tires, exhaust system, heater/defroster, wipers, and ignition system checked.
Make sure your vehicle is mechanically ready for the rigors of winter. Keep your fuel tank sufficiently full—at least half (1/2) a tank is recommended.
Make sure you have sufficient windshield washer fluid in the reservoir that is rated a minimum of -40°C temperature range. If possible, keep an extra jug of windshield washer fluid in your vehicle.
Clear snow and ice from all windows, lights, mirrors, and the roof. After starting your vehicle, wait for the fog to clear from the interior of the windows so you will have good visibility all around.
Have your tires checked or replaced before winter begins? Remember to check tire air pressure frequently, as it decreases in cold weather.
The condition of your vehicle’s tires is important. Worn or damaged tires can hamper your ability to drive safely. For safety reasons, drivers are urged to replace their tires when the tread meets the depth of the requirements. Alternately, you can also check the manufacturer’s wear indicator mark on your tires to see if they need replacing. All tires have tread wear indicators, which are small bars of rubber found between the tread blocks of a tire. When the tread is worn flush with the tread wear indicators, the tire has reached its wear limit and must be replaced as it no longer provides sufficient traction in the rain or snow.

CODE ENFORCEMENTA message from Bates regarding recyclingMost items that we use every day especially containers and paper-based products are made of materials that can be used over and over again. Recycling is collecting used materials that would otherwise be thrown away, then breaking down and remaking these materials into new products. When we recycle more, we are saving resources and sending less trash to landfills and incinerators. That’s good for the environment.
Our crews pick up the recyclable materials from your bin or cart, dump them all into a collection truck and take them to a specially-designed Materials Recovery Facility or MRF. At the MRF, recyclable items are sorted by type, shredded or crushed, baled, and loaded onto tractor-trailer trucks to be shipped to factories or mills in order to be re-manufactured.
All your clean recyclables can go into the cart. No separating. Do not put recyclables into plastic bags. Just place items loosely into the cart.
No bin will be collected if there are non-recyclable items in it. |

NATURE NOTESWinter Moths and Yellow FlowersBy now, summer is long past and Brentwooders are feeling the effects of cold winter nights, grey skies, and drab days. However, look carefully about the neighborhood and you might find a touch of color. Better yet, visit some of our local urban forests and you should be able to see the wild witch hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) which waits until late September or October to send out its clusters of fragrant yellow flowers. These flowers are thought to be pollinated at night by owlets moths (of family Noctuidae) though other pollinators make use of the plant as well. These “winter moths” have evolved the ability to heat themselves by using energy to shiver violently enough to raise their body temperatures by as much as 50 degrees to fly in search of food on frigid nights. Some have called witch hazel Golden Treasure for its “dead of winter” flowers as well as the medicinal extract from its bark that is common in pharmacies and homes across the Americas. The leaves, twigs, and bark contain high levels of tannin, a plant substance that acts as an astringent. Astringents tighten the skin, giving a tingling sensation. First Nations used this native shrub for a variety of medicinal purposes from treating dysentery to hemorrhoids. In colonial folklore, a forked branch of the plant, stripped of bark, has been used to make a “witching stick” for finding water. The practice is called “water dowsing” or divining. Accordingly, the name witch hazel is believed to have come from the Middle English "wicke" for "lively" -- the dowsing stick bends toward the ground when water is detected below -- and "wych," an old Anglo-Saxon word for "bend." Regardless of the etymology, witch hazels are perfect for a modest-sized garden and their tree-like habit allows for underplanting of choice groundcovers. They are low maintenance and a delight in the fall and winter, reminding us of the promise that spring will come again.

Hopefully, you were able to catch a glimpse of him as he drove thru our town. He made a special stop at Bartlett Park where more than 100 children were able to take a picture with him and received gifts thanks to the generous donations from the following organizations:

COMPOSTING
The Town of Brentwood is still exploring a partnership with a locally-owned business to service a food scrap recycling and composting service for Brentwood residents!
Let us know if you are interested in participating in the program.
WHY ARE WE DOING THIS? Compostable materials included in our solid waste stream can reach 50%.
Please reach out to the town at info@brentwoodmd.gov to let us know if you are interested so that we may pursue companies that offer
this service.
HOW WILL IT WORK? A company will supply each participating household with an airtight bin and compostable bags.
WHAT CAN BE COMPOSTED? The general rule is that anything that grows - goes in the bin.
HOW MUCH WILL IT COST? Pricing is generally tiered depending on the number of Brentwood participants.
