Press ReleaseFor Immediate Release December 19, 2023
The Town of Brentwood and the Town of North Brentwood have been awarded $213,135 in planning assistance support by The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission. The Town of Brentwood and the Town of North Brentwood secured $213,135 in support from The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) for climate action planning and flooding and stormwater risk management planning to equip the municipalities with data and tools to assess current and possible hydrometeorological hazards as well as their vulnerability and options for risk reduction and mitigation. The Town of Brentwood will also pursue a Climate Action Plan that adapts and uses the recommendations of the 2022 Adopted Prince George’s County Draft Climate Action Plan. The M-NCPPC Prince George’s County Planning Board approved the project funding at its Thursday, December 14, 2023, meeting through the Planning Assistance to Municipalities and Communities (PAMC) program, which offers planning, design, technical, and financial assistance for planning-related projects in response to requests from County municipalities and community organizations. Located within the Anacostia Watershed along the Northwest Branch of the Anacostia River, approximately 66% of improved properties in the Town of Brentwood, and virtually 40% percent of those in the Town of North Brentwood are in a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)-designated flood zone, which doesn’t account for climate change events. Regarding potential levee failures, the draft Prince George’s County and City of Laurel Hazard Mitigation Plan 2023 notes, that the Brentwood Levee has the highest exposure risk, with approximately $212 Million in property exposure, with 1074 buildings in the levee inundation area. We’re grateful that the Planning Board and Commission recognized the need for comprehensive plans that provide our residents, business owners, and visitors with the knowledge and actions to be safe,” said Petrella Robinson, Mayor of North Brentwood. The report data and tools will help both our communities. This support is coming at an important time because both of our communities are feeling the effects of increased stormwater and flooding and from climate change, said Rocio Treminio-Lopez, Mayor of Brentwood. Not only will these plans help our towns, but they can serve as models for other historically disadvantaged communities in the county. The Town of Brentwood is a nine-year recipient of Tree City USA, has distributed $152,000 to residents for stormwater improvements, recently established a Native Plant Network, and has been certified Bronze by Sustainable Maryland. In the last few years, The Town of North Brentwood’s primary objective has been understanding the role of community participation in green stormwater infrastructure. The town recently created its Green Team. The Town is most interested in ways to manage water runoff to help prevent flooding in those FEMA-designated flood zones.###
